Discover the Exciting New Tourist Market Set to Transform Puerto Juárez

Every now and then, Cancún surprises us with something fresh. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz around a new tourist-only market being built in Puerto Juárez, right next to the ferry terminal for Isla Mujeres.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this project, and the more I learn, the more I think it’s going to become one of those little spots that visitors talk about after their trip..

Why Puerto Juárez Makes Perfect Sense

If you've ever taken the ferry to Isla Mujeres, you know Puerto Juárez is always moving — families, couples, backpackers, everyone heading to the island.

Right now it’s basically a transit hub… but this new project aims to turn it into a place people want to hang out in, not just walk through.

And that’s honestly a smart move.

The location is ideal for:

  • Anyone catching the ferry

  • People coming back from Isla Mujeres

  • Travelers staying near downtown who want something local and easy

You don't have to go deep into Cancún or spend half a day exploring — the market will be right there.

What the Market Will Actually Have

From what’s been shared so far, the whole idea is to create a clean, organized, welcoming space that feels authentic without being overwhelming. Think of it as a “tourist-friendly version” of a local market, apart from adding over 18 commercial spaces for various businesses!

Here’s what you can expect:

Handmade Souvenirs

Local artists selling things you actually want to bring home — woven bags, pottery, bracelets, embroidered clothing, small art pieces.

Real Food, Not Resort Food

Street-style snacks, fresh fruit, cold drinks, small local dishes— perfect if you’re hungry before the ferry or craving something quick after the trip.

Colorful Corners to Explore

Painted walls, decorations, local crafts displayed in nice open areas. A good spot to grab photos without feeling rushed.

A Better Layout

Good lighting, clean bathrooms, organized stalls, safer walkways. Basically: the experience tourists hope for when they hear the word “market.”

Services Travelers Actually Use

Last-minute essentials, small convenience shops, and maybe even tour stands or ticket counters.

Everything is built with the intention of making the traveler’s life easier.

Why I Think Tourists Will Enjoy It

Not every visitor wants to go deep into downtown or wander through crowded markets. For a lot of people, something simple, safe, and close to their hotels is perfect!

This new market checks all those boxes.

It will be:

  • Easy to visit

  • Affordable compared to hotel-zone prices

  • Fun to explore for 20–30 minutes

  • A quick taste of local culture

  • A nice way to start (or end) a day trip to Isla Mujeres

  • The closest market to the hotels in the nearby zones (Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres)

It gives travelers a small but meaningful moment of “real Mexico” without needing to travel much for it!

When Will It Open?

Construction is already underway. There’s no exact date yet, but officials are treating it as a priority project. With the location and demand, I’m guessing it’ll get a lot of attention as it develops.

I’ll keep an eye on it and share updates as soon as I hear more.
